?
What is an ion?
An ion is formed when the parent atom will either loose or gain an electron/s. An ion will always have a full outer shell

What is the name for a: a) positive ion b) negative ion/
a) a cation b) an anion
2 of 6
What is the markscheme definition of an ion?
An ion has the same number of protons but a different number of electron, it will have either a positive or negative charge
3 of 6
When are positive ions formed?
When a metal atom (group 1-3) loose the electrons in their outer shell
4 of 6
What groups form negative ions?
Groups 5,6 and 7 and will gain electrons until the have a complete outer shell
5 of 6
How are ionic bonds formed?
Ionic bonds form between metals and non-metals. Metal ions lose electrons to form cations. Non-metals gain electrons to form anions. The oppositely charged ions attract one another- called Electrostatic attraction
