What is an ion?
An Ion is an atom or group of atoms with a charge.
1 of 8
Why can atoms gain or lose electrons?
They have incomplete outer shells
2 of 8
How can atoms become ionic?
If they lose or gain electrons by any means.
3 of 8
What is a cation?
An element with a positive charge
4 of 8
Do metals gain or lose electrons?
Metals lose electrons, making them cations. The number of electrons they lose is the number of electrons on their outer shell.
5 of 8
What is an anion?
An anion is a negatively charged ion.
6 of 8
Do non-metals gain or lose electrons?
Non-metals gain electrons to form anions. When non-metals become anions the end of their name changes to -ide. Non-metals gain enough electrons to complete their outer shell, so group seven gains electrons from group 1.
7 of 8
What happens when atoms transfer electrons to each other?
When electrons are transferred from a metal to a non-metal, the charges become opposite, attracting the elements together, forming an ionic bond.
