Research evidence doesnt support the model.

De list: South West America, 831 Inmates. Wanted to see if belonging to a street gang before entering prison increased the amount of aggression shown. They found no link between them.

Therefore research doesnt support that agg people outside prison are agg inside prison. So the IM lacks reliability as it doesnt consistantly show... There may be other reasons why people show IA.

Moreover, This model is not helpful when trying to reduce levels of aggression.

Mc Corkle et al: Little Practical support, Doesnt provide suggestions to manage aggression or reduce in general. Setting causes agg: could be changed. Personality causes agg: More difficult to change. Doesnt suggest how to do this either.

Results...

Found that aggression in prison was negativley correlated with space. Therefore, the DM is supported . As research conducted shows deprivations in prison= more agg = more reliable. And so we can conclude deprivations are causes of agg.

This model does provide practical advice on how to reduce prison aggression.

Richards: US, 900 assaults, 1984-1995. Found some inmate programmes lower or higher agg. Enviroment changed=levels of agg changed. So wardens can then introduce programmes to reduce agg.

Therefore..

The model is useful, as it offers reasonable explanation to aggression and provides advice, by changing the setting.

The reason why people are aggressive is due to an interaction between both models.

The amount of agg shown by a prisoner depends on the enviroment they are in and the type of person or personality factors they have. It is impossible to seperate as personality and the enviroment interact with each other.

Both models are limited , only consider one side. Must consider both.
