What is a Hydrocarbon?
Any chemical made only of carbon (C) and hydrogen (H).
1 of 20
Are Alkanes saturated or unsaturated?
Alkanes are saturated (because they are holding the maximum amount of (hydrogen) atoms.)
2 of 20
What is the general formula for Alkanes?
CnH(2n+2)
3 of 20
Are Alkenes saturated or unsaturated?
Alkenes are unsaturated (because they have a double bond that can break open to hold extra (hydrogen) atoms.
4 of 20
What is the general formula for Alkenes?
CnH2n
5 of 20
Name 3 Alkanes and the number of Carbon atoms in them.
1. Methane, 2. Ethane, 3. Propane, 4. Butane, 5. Pentane
6 of 20
Name 3 Alkenes and the number of carbon atoms in them.
2. Ethene, 3. Propene, 4. Butene, 5. Pentene, 6.Hexene
7 of 20
Explain the Bromine Water experiment
Bromine water is decolourised in the presence of Alkenes but not in the presence of Alkanes.
8 of 20
What is polymerisation?
A chemical process that combines several monomers to form a polymer or polymeric compound.
9 of 20
Draw the diagram to show this.
Alkane with 'n' next to the brackets that are overlapping the bonds.
10 of 20
Name some polymers and their uses.
poly - propene - shatter proof - bowls, polyethene - flexible - plastic bags, polychloroethene - tough - window panes, polytetraflouroethene - slippery - no-stick frying pans.
11 of 20
What is cracking?
Separating longer Alkanes into a shorter Alkane and and Ethene (using heat).
12 of 20
Why do we crack Alkanes?
we have an large appetite for petrol and diesel in our cars which are shorter chained. Fuel oil, naphtha and bitumen in crude oil exceed demand. Also, shorter chained molecules ignite easier.
13 of 20
What is a biofuel?
A fuel derived directly from living matter.
14 of 20
Name some advantages of Biofuels.
Renewable, carbon neutral, no green house effect, increased labour; more work.
15 of 20
Name some disadvantages of Biofuels.
eed land to grow crops, losing land to grow food, low availability; low impact, loss of habitats, burning of crops --> CO2
16 of 20
What is incomplete combustion?
Incomplete combustion occurs when the supply of air or oxygen is poor. Water is still produced, but carbon monoxide and carbon are produced instead of carbon dioxide.
17 of 20
Name some dangers of incomplete combustion.
carbon monoxide poisoning, carbon collects in lungs. Soot on walls
18 of 20
What is fractional distillation?
separating a mixture (oil) into a number of different parts, called fractions
19 of 20
Is the Distillation tower hotter at the top or at the bottom?
Bottom (bitumen, fuel oil)
