Hormones and menstrual cycle

?
what are the 4 main hormones produced in the menstrual cycle (in order of production)?
-FSH
-oestrogen
-LH
-progesterone
1 of 13
where is FSH produced and what does it do?
-pituitary gland
-stimulates an egg to mature
-stimulate oestogen release
2 of 13
where is oestrogen produced and what does it do?
-ovaries
-thickens uterus lining
-inhibits FSH production (so no more eggs mature)
-stimulates LH production
3 of 13
where is LH produced and what does it do?
-pituitary gland
-stimulates ovulation
4 of 13
where is progesterone produced and what does it do?
-ovaries
-maintains uterus lining
-inhibits LH and FSH production
5 of 13
why is progesterone used in the mini pill (how does it work)?
-it inhibits FSH and LH production
-so eggs don't mature
-ovulation is stopped
6 of 13
where is adrenaline produced?
adrenal gland (top of kidneys)
7 of 13
what does adrenaline do?
-increases heart rate/ breathing rate
-boosts delivery of oxygen and glucose to brain and muscles (preparing to fight/ flight)
-not controlled by negative feedback (will continue to be produced)
8 of 13
what is a problem with adrenaline not being part of a negative feedback loop?
-it will continue to be produced in times of stress or fear
-puts people on edge/ restless
-because they have so much energy being released
-it stops energy going to unnecessary part of the body (digestive system)
9 of 13
where is ADH produced and what does it do?
-pituitary gland
-makes the kidney tubules more permeable
-so more water can be selectively reabsorbed
10 of 13
where is thyroxine produced?
thyroid gland (neck/ throat)
11 of 13
what does thyroxide do?
-stimulate the basal metabolic rate (respiration, formation of glycogen, protein and lipids, etc.)
12 of 13
what happens if a person has low thyroxide levels in the blood?
-pituitary gland releases TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone)
-thyroid releases more thyroxide
