One of the most dramatic events in the history of medicine happened in the middle ages-the black death.

The Black Death started in China and came to Europe in 1348.Once it had arrived,it spread quickly from place to place.

Bubonic Plague was when people were infected by flea bites from fleas that had previously bitten infected rats.Buboes appeared under the arms or in the groin often as big as apples.Usually people who had it would die after 4-7 days.

Pneumonic Plague was a disease that attacked the lungs and was more lethal that the bubonic plague.Victims would cough up blood and usually die within a day or two.

By the end of 1349,one in three people had died of the black death in Europe.In London probably half the population-50,000-had died.

People blamed the Black Death on various things including;bad air and bad smells,the stars and planets,minority groups,god punishing them,imbalance of the four humours and poor living conditions.

War was common in the middle ages,people got injured in battle,and barber surgeons developed new ways of treating them.

Operations were very dangerous as infections were common and could sometimes lead to death.They were only carried out when necessary,such as amputating a limb or removing an arrow.

Christian barber surgeons are sometimes compared to the Muslim doctors who treated soldiers during the Crusades.Muslim doctors did not operate as often as Christian surgeons,and they were careful to keep the wound clean to help prevent infection.

Living conditions and health and hygiene in towns were pretty bad in the Middle Ages.

The most healthy places were the monasteries because they were located near fresh water and had toilets,they were rich and well organised and Monks believed that being clean was part of worshipping God.

The church did not encourage women to take an active role in medicine because they saw women as inferior to men.
