Countries who support each other in the
event of a war.

Arms Race
When countries race to build up their armies,
navies and weapons.
Before the 1st WW, Britain and Germany were
trying to build the biggest navy.

Recruitment
Enlisting men into the armed forces.

Propaganda
Material created to persuade. Will usually only
show one side of information. For example,
propaganda posters were created to help recruit
soldiers.

Pal’s Battalions
A way of encouraging more men to join the
army. Groups of men that joined together
(football teams, etc) would be kept together in
the army.

Censorship
Controlling what information the public receives.
Not allowing negative information to be reported
in the news.

The Western Front
The main theatre (area) of war. A line of trenches
that ran from the English Channel, through
Belgium and France.

Trench
A network of ditches dug into the ground to
protect soldiers from gunfire. The frontline trench
was nearest the enemy.

No Mans Land
The area of land in between each side’s trenches.
It was littered with mines, barbed wire, and
bodies.

Artillery
Cannon-like guns fired shells (filled with
shrapnel or gas), which could destroy
trenches.
