how did ebert become the president ?
prince max formed a new gov in 1918 oct, and wanted to end the war but refused to whilst kaiser still in control, revolution began and kiel mutiny after this to get kaiser to resign, 9th nov kasier abdicated and ebert was the new chancellor, end war

he kept the old gov in place and worked along side soldiers and workers councils, didnt confiscate land, won support of trade union

because the gov had to move from berlin to weimar because berlin became too dangerous

its democratic, everyone over 20 could vote, regular checks carried out so that no one person had too much power, change person with most power every 7 years

coalition government, no strong decisions, weak in a crisis because you have to consult with so many people to agree, based on division and violence; relied on army to stop riots

when germany had to give back land, reduce their army, pay reparations and take all the blame for the war

they were capitalists and believed a strong government was needed, intrest of nation rather than individuals, national party was the main right wing

that germany should be controlled by the people opposed capitalism, cooperation not independence, geman communist party was main party

because the three main parties only got 45% of seats instead of 77%, extreme parties now saw 20%

they opposed the weimar republic as the extremeist parties were mainly made up of working class or wealthy people

they both had their private armies who started killing anyone they didnt agree with between 1919-1923 376 were killed

the spartactist revolt

why did the spartacist revolt ?
when workers took to the streets and seized the gov. newspaper and telegraph offices which made the gov feel as though they were loosing control.

very successful killed main leaders to ensure that the rebellion didnt start again.

the kapp putsch

when rebels took control of the city, they turned against their arms and their republic.

how successful was the crushing of the kapp putsch ?
not successful kapp fled after the army refused to attack the people but the rebellion eventually collasped and weimar returned and just put one person was put in prison

bankruptcy, occupation of the ruhr and inflation

because of the treaty of versailles, reparations asked to be reduced but declined because france needed the money by 1923 germany could no longer pay reparations

germans couldnt sell any of their resources and becasue they couldnt fight with their small army had to passively resist and increase germanys debt

how did inflation affect the weimar republic ?
germany needed more money because of the debt he needed to pay so printed more money to because of the debt they needed to pay, vicious circle because made money more and more worthless.

the government for signing all the treaties and printing the money in the first place

by starving and just genuinly not being able to afford to live by not being able to afford other simple goods
