What is the nasal cavity?
The main route of air entry into the body.

What is the Larynx?
Is the organ that produces vocal sounds as air passes over the vocal chords and therefore plays a large role in speech.

What is the Trachea?
Is the membranous, muscular tube with cartilaginous rings that carries air from the larynx to the bronchi.

What is the Bronchi and bronchioles?
The bronchial walls are composed of the same tissues as the trachea. They subdivide into bronchioles and finally end in the alveoli.

What is Pleural membranes?
The pleura is made up of a closed sac which contains a small amount of pleural fluid. The lung inside this sac so that one layer adheres to the surface of the lung and the other layer adheres to the internal surface of the rib cage.

What are the lungs?
Main organs of the respiratory system that transport oxygen from the air into your blood and remove carbon dioxide from your blood. Each is is divided into lobes.

What is the alveoli?
They are tiny air chambers found at the end of each bronchiole. The walls of of the alveoli are one cell thick.

What is the diaphragm?
The diaphragm is a large, dome shaped sheet of muscle which encloses the lower surface of the chest cavity and plays a major role in the inspiration and expiration process.

What is the intercostal muscles?
These occupy the spaces between the 12 pairs of ribs and it is their contraction which allow chest expansion for breathing.

What is Inspiration?
The intercostal muscles contract (pulling the rib cage up and out) whilst the diaphragm also contracts (pulling it downwards). This allows the lungs to expand and the pressure within the thoracic cavity falls.

What is expiration?
Relaxation of the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm results in inward and downward movement of the ribcage
