What are the group 7 elements known as?
Non metals called Halogens
1 of 12
What are the halogens?
Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, As tatine
2 of 12
What are the trends of the halogens when you go down the group?
They become less reactive so it is hard to gain an extra electron as the outer shell is further from the nucleus. They have higher melting and boiling points. They have higher relative atomic masses.
3 of 12
What gas are fluorine, chlorine and bromine?
Poisonous gas
4 of 12
What colour is Flourine?
Yellow
5 of 12
What colour is chlorine?
Green
6 of 12
What colour is Bromine?
Red brown
7 of 12
What colour is Iodine?
Dark grey crystalline solid or a purple vapour.
8 of 12
How can Halogen atoms share electrons?
Covalent bonding with other non metals to achieve a full outer shell
9 of 12
What do all compounds form when halogens react with non metals?
Simple molecular structures.
10 of 12
What do halogens form when they bond ionically with metals?
1- ions called halides and the compound formed have ionic structure.
11 of 12
When can a displacement reaction occur?
With a more reactive halogen and a salt of a less reactive one
