Name properties of group of 7?
They exist as diatomic molecules -Poor conductor of hear/electricity -Toxic and corrosive
1 of 8
What do halogens form when they react with metals?
ionic compounds(salts) which contain halide ions
2 of 8
What can halogens be used for?
Disinfectants/bleaches as they can kill microorganism and remove colour from material
3 of 8
How can the order of reactivity be worked out?
Through Displacement reaction
4 of 8
What happens in a displacement reaction?
A more reactive element takes place of the less reactive element in a n ionic compound.
5 of 8
Describe the reactivity trend?
Reactivity decreases as you go down the group
6 of 8
Why is this?
Halogens gain an electron when they react.Down the group the distance between nucleus and electron increases this means the force of attraction between positive nucleus and incoming electron decreases and so ion don't form easily
7 of 8
Why is displacement reaction described as a Redox reaction?
This is because Oxidation is loss of electron and reduction is the opposite the two process occur at the same time in displacement reaction
