What is Parliament?
Where most of our laws are made by passing acts of parliament, laws made by parliament are referred to as statutes or legislation

What is Parliament made up of?
The monarch, The house of Lords and The House of Commons

What role does the monarch have?
The monarch only has a formal role in law making, they simply give their royal assent

What is the main job of the Lords?
Act as a 'double check' on new laws

Why does the government change the law?
As our culture and norms in society change it is necessary to change the way we see crime

What is the 10 minute rule?
This is where MPs have 10 minutes to give a speech about the issue they want to raise, other MPs also have the opportunity to give an opposing speech

What is a green paper?
A green paper is a consultation document issued by the government which contains policy proposals for debate and discussion

What is a white paper?
A white paper is a document setting out their detailed plans for legislation

What is the 1st reading?
This is where the name of the Bill and its main aims are read out

what is the 2nd reading?
Where the main debate will take place

What is the committee stage?
Where a chosen smaller group of MP's look closely at the Bill and suggest any final amendments

What is the report stage?
Where the committee report back to the full house and a vote is taken on any amendments

What is the 3rd reading?
Where the final draft if the Bill is read out and voted on by the house

What is the 'ping pong effect'?
After the Bill has gone through the house of commons it will then go through the house of lords and repeat the exact same steps

What is the royal assent?
This is when both houses agree the final content, a bill is approved by the Queen and becomes a law or 'Act of Parliament'
