What causes waves?
They are caused by winds dragging over a surface of water.
1 of 14
What is the Fetch?
The length of water that the wind blows over. A large expanse of water and high winds increases the fetch and energy of the wave.
2 of 14
What is the swash?
When waves move towards the coast.
3 of 14
What is backwash?
When waves move back into the sea
4 of 14
What is a constructive wave?
A wave that has more swash than backwash and is more likely to deposit sediment and construct a beach.
5 of 14
What is a destructive wave?
A wave that has more backwash than swash and takes material away from the beach, destroying the beach through coastal erosion.
6 of 14
List the four coastal erosion processes.
Hydraulic action, Abrasion, Attrition and Solution.
7 of 14
Headlands and bays are types of :
Erosional landforms
8 of 14
How are headlands and bays formed?
In the beginning, there is one coast line. Headlands and bays are formed when there are alternating bands of hard and soft rock. The hard rock are more resistant to erosion than the soft rock. This means that the band of soft rock get eroded faster.

How is a wave-cut platform formed?
When a cliff gets eroded by processes such as hydraulic action, it forms a wave-cut notch which then expands to make the rock above unstable. The rock then falls over to create a platform known as a wave-cut platform.
10 of 14
What is the geography term for a cliff being eroded backwards?
Cliff retreat.
11 of 14
What type of rock are arches, stacks and stumps made of?
Hard rock/Headlands
12 of 14
Arches, stacks and stumps are created due to crack in the rock known as...
a fault line.
13 of 14
What is Long shore drift?
It's a deposition process that occurs when there is prevailing wind in one direction (approx. 30 degrees) and it carries constructive waves. The backwash returns the sediment at 90 degrees and this continues until all the sediment is moved.
