The first person to comment on gender and language, Jespersen was not a very empirical linguist. He relied heavily on impressions and his sexist view of the world. He suggested women have small vocabularies and over-use certain adjectives and adverbs

Status vs support
Deborah Tannen- Men seek to achieve status because they see things as competitive and try to be dominant. Whereas women see talking as a way to gain conformation and support for their ideas.

Independence vs intimacy
Deborah tannen- Women often think in terms of closeness and support, and struggle to preserve intimacy. Men, concerned with status, tend to focus more on independence.

Advice vs Understanding
Deborah Tannen- Men see a complaint as a challenge to find a solution.

Information vs feelings
Deborah tannen- Historically, mens concerns were seen as more important than those of women, but today the situation may be reversed so that the giving of information is considered of less value than sharing of emotions.

Orders vs proposals
Deborah Tannen- Women suggest things in indirect ways such as 'why don't we?' 'Lets..' whereas men prefer to use a direct imperative.

Conflict vs compromise
Deborah Tannen- Easily observed in work-situations conflict, men will often resist it vocally, while women may appear to accede, but complain subsequently.
