What 2 things happen when the stomata is opened?
1. Carbon dioxide taken in 2. Water vapour lost
1 of 22
What is the transpiration stream and what is it driven by?
Water from roots, pulled up through xylem to take the place of the evaporated water from leaf. Driven by the evaporation of water from leaf.
2 of 22
What does phloem tissue do?
carries dissolved sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant (including growing regions and storage organs)
3 of 22
What causes a plant to wilt, and why do they wilt?
When water is being lost faster than it can be replaced. It wilts to the the leaves hand down and make the surface area for water loss smaller.
4 of 22
Why do leaves have many air spaces?
so the co2 can come into contact with lots of cells to increase surface ares for diffusion
5 of 22
Why do plants need sugar, mineral ions and water?
for energy for respiration, production of proteins and other molecules in cells.
6 of 22
what controls core body temp?
thermoregulatory centre of brain
7 of 22
What does your body do when you get too hot?
1. blood vessels that supply skin capillaries dilate - lose more energy by radiation 2. Sweating rate increases - cools body down as it evaporates
8 of 22
What does your body do when youre too cold?
1. Blood vessels that supply skin capillaries constrict - reduces energy loss through radiation 2. Less sweat 3. Shiver - muscles need respiration which releases more energy 3. Hairs erect - insulating air layer
9 of 22
How does the body increase blood sugar levels?
Pancreas secretes glucagon - makes liver turn glycogen into glucose
10 of 22
why do red blood cells have no nucleus
more space to carry oxygen
11 of 22
whats are platelets?
cells that help blood clot at a wound
12 of 22
why is urea produced?
breakdown of amino acids
13 of 22
what do patients have to take after a kidney transplant?
immunosupressants
14 of 22
where is carbon dioxide naturally stored?
oceans, lakes, ponds
15 of 22
what does human waste pollute?
air, water, land
16 of 22
how to humans reduce the amount of land available?
building, quarrying, landfill
17 of 22
Why does deforestation occur?
crops (for biofuel production) can be grown
18 of 22
Why is acid rain bad?
damages trees, makes rivers acidic - animals cant live there
19 of 22
What does global warming cause?
extreme climate change, sea levels rise, reduction of biodiversity, changes in migration and distribution of species
20 of 22
What is methane (from biogas generator) used for?
heating, cooking, refrigeration
21 of 22
Give 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of battery chickens
reduction of heat loss when close together - food more efficient. Controlled body temp so that they dont use energy to warm up 2. Need constant monitoring, disease can spread quickly
