Functions of organelles

?
Nucleus
- control centre of the cell
-produces mRNA for p. synthesis)
-hold genetic material (DNA)
-manufacture chromosomes
1 of 13
Nucleolus
- contains genetic code for producing ribosomes and RNA
2 of 13
Nuclear Envelope
-controls entry and exit to the nucleus
- contains nuclear pores (mRNA leaves the nucleus in p. synthesis)
3 of 13
Ribosomes
- site of protein synthesis in the cytoplasm and rER
- made of a small subunit and a large subunit
80s - eukaryotes / 70s - prokaryotes
4 of 13
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
- rough = ribosomes on the surface
- site of p. synthesis
- synthesises and packages proteins into vesicles to send to the golgi body
5 of 13
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
- synthesises lipids and carbohydrates
- breaks down toxins
6 of 13
Golgi Apparatus / Body
- modifies proteins and packages them into golgi vesicles
- produces secretary enzyme
- produces lysosomes
- modifies lipids
-secretes carbohydrates
7 of 13
Golgi vesicles
- move to fuse with plasma membrane
protein secreted by exocytosis
8 of 13
Lysosomes
- special type of vesicles
- sacs with a single membranes
-contain hydrolytic enzymes
- breakdown unwanted structures / worn down organelles / bacteria (in phagocytosis)
9 of 13
Mitochondria
- produce ATP through aerobic respiration
used in:
p. synthesis
exocytosis
muscle contraction
active transportation
10 of 13
Chloroplasts
- site of photosynthesis in plants
- contains chlorophyll to absorb the light energy from the sun to produce glucose
11 of 13
Plasma membrane
- made up of phospholipids
- selectively permeable : only allows entry/exit of certain molecules
-barrier to external environment
-separates organelles
12 of 13
Cell Wall
- gives plants structure and support
- strong = allows cell to maintain shape and resist osmotic lysis
- cellulose = plants
- murein = bacteria
