Solution
drug + exipients are dissolved in a solvent system. does not really require shaking before administration

Dispersion's in which the drug is dispersed in the external phase. the drug will settle and separate from solvent when stored. Therefore must be shaken well before administration to ensure equal dispersion

Emulsions and creams
insoluble liquid dispersed in a 2nd liquid phase. needs emulsifying agent to prevent separation

ointment + pastes
no water . greasy hydrocarbon based SEMI SOLIDS

Gels
liquid phase (normally water) constrained within a 3D polymeric network

Lotions
low- med viscosity TOPICAL application. applied to unbroken skin

solid dosage form designed to dissolve when inserted. could be for local or systemic action

must be sterile. could be intramuscular. intravenous. subcutaneous

Transdermal
