define what excretion is?
removal of a metabolic waste products out of the body like co2/nitrogenous waste products
1 of 14
metabolic waste is....
waste substances that may be toxic/pruduced in excess yield from metabolic reactions in the body
2 of 14
hepatic portal vein is...
a blood vessel that has cappliaries in both ends carrying blood from the digestive system to the liver
3 of 14
urea is a...
excretory product from from the breakdown of excessive amino acid via deanimation/ornthine cycle
4 of 14
selective reabsorption is a process involving when...
useful substances are reabsorped from the nephroin into the blood stream while the excretory substances remain in the nephron
5 of 14
ornthine cycle is a process where...
ammonia produced from deanimation of amino acids are converted into urea, taking place in the cytosol/mitochondria as ATP is used
6 of 14
ultrafiltration is a process where....
filtration at a molecular level takes place, in the glomerulus where large molecules are left in the blood and small molecules pass into the bowmans capsule
7 of 14
cotransporter proteins are....
found int the plasma membrane, that allow facuilitateddiffusion of simple ions to be accumilated by transport of large molecules such as glucose
8 of 14
what are neurosecretory cells?
specialised cells that act as nerve cells, releases hormornes in the bloood, manufactures ADH in the cell body, passes down the axon, stored in the intererminal bulb, action potential passes releasing ADH
9 of 14
what a dialysis membrane?
partially permeable membrane that separates the dialysis fluid from the patients blood into a machine
10 of 14
haemodialysis is when....
blood taken out from a vein, passes through a machine so exchange can occur across a artifical permeable membrane
11 of 14
what is a monoclonal antibody>?
antibodies that are identical as they have been produced by cells that are clones of the origional cell
12 of 14
what are osmoreceptors?
receptor cells that monitor water potential in the blood.
13 of 14
osmoregulation involves...
the control and regulation of water potential of the blood and body fluids. Kidneys control the WP of the blood
