What are the 4 types of extraneous variables?
Situational variables, participant variables, experimenter effects and demand characteristics.

What are situational variables?
Aspects of the environment that could affect a participant's behaviour e.g. noise, temperature, light levels.

How can situational variables be controlled for?
Standardised procedure used for all to ensure conditions are same for all participants.

What do participant variables refer to?
The ways participants vary from each other. E.g. mood, intelligence, concentration.

How can participant variables be controlled for?
By using a different experimental design or randomly allocating participants to the conditions.

What are experimenter effects?
Experiment bias where the experimenter can give clues to participants about how they should behave.

What about the experimenter can also affect the participant's behaviour?
The personal attributes e.g. gender, age, accent.
