What is an independent measures design?
Different participants are used for each condition of the experiment.

No problems with order effects as different participants are used.

May be individual differences and therefore the potential for error.

What is a repeated measures design?
Same participants used for all conditions.

No individual differences as the same participants are used.

What is a weakness of repeated measures design?
Order effects may be present as people may behave differently because of the order in which the conditions are performed.

How can order effects be reduced?
By counterbalancing. If there are 2 conditions, half the participants can do condition 1 first and then 2 and half the participants can do condition 2 first and then 1 so any order effects will be randomised.

What is a matched pairs design?
Different participants used for each condition, but participant variables are controlled for by matching the participants.

What is a strength of a matched pairs design?
No individual differences and no order effects.

What is a weakness of matched pairs design?
Difficult/time consuming and can be expensive.
