What does EEA stand for?
Environment of Evolutionary adaptation
1 of 15
What does EAA mean?
refers to the environment in which a species 1st evolved
2 of 15
What was the early human diet like + why?
Lived in a hunter-gatherer society. Food was scarce + so when prey was caught they ate the most fatty areas and the areas which were rich in calories. This would enable them to get all the necessary vitamins&nutrients needed to stay alive +find prey

What 3 main areas are looked at?
The preference for meat, calories, taste aversion ( bait shyness+ medicine effect)
4 of 15
What evidence is their for the preference of meat?
Fossil evidence - ate organs of other animals

Milton
Early humans could not have been vegetarian, despite claims-couldnt have harnessed enough nutrition from vegetation to have evolved into intelligent creatures they are today. Need AA in order to grow

Gibson + Wardle
Best predictor of calories preference; give 4-5 yr olds the options of fruit + veg. They chose banana + potato which are highly rich in calories

Steven + Price
Highly rich in calorie diet could be due to the rise in obesity. People have an inability to escape the evolutionary pressure ------ not true AN numbers increasing aswell

Stanford
Chimpanzees who have been starved, when first kill they go for the fattiest region of the animal e.g. brain

What is bait shyness/taste aversion?
Whereby if a human/animal eats a small amount of something which is harmful - they avoid it whenever they come into contact with it again. aquired 24hrs after contact.if they are to survive dont want to repeat mistake

Garcia et al (BS)
1st to study bait shyness in the lab. Rats who had been made ill through radiation after eating saccharine developed an aversion to it - associated illness with it

Bernstein + Webster
Gave pps novel ice cream b4 chemotherapy +found they developed a taste aversion to ice cream. - linked illness with ice cream. IMPLICATION FOR CANCER PPS

Medicine effect?
Not only can animals develop a taste aversion in order to ensure survival , but also can learn a preference for food which makes them healthier - e.g. food eaten before recovering from illness
13 of 15
Garcia et al (ME)
Found when a distinctive flavour is presented to thiamine deficient rats + followed by injection of thymine ,they required a preference for the taste
14 of 15
Implication?
Chemo patients - have to change the food before chemi
