Refers to a person's occupation or position in society and it has been shown to be a significant element in perceived ethnic identity.

People often live with people with similar ethnicity. This is partly for social and cultural reasons, so that they can avail of places of worship, shops, services and places to socialise.

COLONISATION
This involves setting up settlements in the new colony. This process results in the migration of people from the ruling country to the new colony. These people came as administrators and they usually established an enclave in a port.

HISTORICAL ANIMOSITIES
Each new generation grows up with the information about past wrong doings of the other group in the country. Mostly occur in segregated societies where there is minimal social contact between groups.

Prejudice against one section of society, either on racial or religious grounds.

CULTURAL CONFLICTS
Globalisation facilitated the movement of people and ideas throughout the world. This can encourage rejection of others cultures.

Ethnic conflict can arise from serious mistreatment of an ethnic group. United Nations defines human rights as "basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled"

DISCRIMINATION
Allocation of resources can favour the ruling group.

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE
This is the active refusal to obey certain laws or commands of a government (non-violent protest) This is when the protesting group withdraws from its participation in the working of the country, this includes the non-payment of rates, taxes.

CIVIL WAR
This describes a situation where there are clearly identified armed forces within the country actively engaged in armed conflict with each other.

TERRORISM
Involves armed conflict but the terrorist is a member of an illegal guerrilla organisation which operates within the community. They operate secretively within their community in aim to pursue some ideological goal.

TERRITORIAL DIVISION
Opposing sides in an ethnic conflict will have to attempt a solution - geographical distribution of the various groups involved.

AUTONOMY
Territorial division can sometimes result in a region gaining some degree of political control while still remaining an internal part of the ruling country

ETHNIC CLEANSING
This is the most extreme form of segregation, the whole scale removal of an ethnic group from an area.
