Why do reactions need to be carefully controlled?
To get the right amounts of substances.
1 of 13
How can you make a reaction happen more quickly?
Raise the temperature. This would speed up the useful and unwanted reactions. There is also a limit to how far you can raise the temperature inside a living cell before it gets damaged.
2 of 13
What do living things produce that act as a biological catalyst?
Enzymes which reduce the needs for high temperatures and speed up the useful chemical reactions in the body.
3 of 13
What are enzymes?
Large proteins made up of chains of amino acids which are folded into unique shapes helping enzymes do their jobs.
4 of 13
What do chemical reactions involve?
Things being split apart or joined together.
5 of 13
What do every enzymes have?
Active sites with a unique shape that fits onto the substance involved in a reaction.
6 of 13
What is a Catalyst?
A substance which increases the speed of reaction without being changed or used up in the reaction.
7 of 13
How will a reaction not be catalysed?
If the substance doesn't fit the active site.
8 of 13
What is a Substrate?
The substance which the enzyme acts on.
9 of 13
How does the rate of enzyme catalysed reactions change?
When the temperature and pH changes.
10 of 13
What happens to the enzymes when the temperature is too hot?
Some of the bonds holding the enzyme together will break. This changes the shape of the active site so the substrate won't fit any more, and the enzyme is DENATURED.
11 of 13
Where do enzymes work best at?
The optimum temperature or optimum pH.
12 of 13
How does enzymes affect pH?
If it is too high or low the pH interfere with bonds holding the enzyme together. This changes the shape of the active site and DENATURES the enzyme.
