Battery
A collections of cells that transfer chemical energy to electrical energy.
1 of 18
Polarity
The type of charge (+/-) or the orientation of a cell relative to a component.
2 of 18
Series
An arrangement of electrical components where they are joined end-to-end meaning the current is the same in each component.
3 of 18
Parallel
A type of branching circuit where there is more than one path for current but all components have the same p.d.
4 of 18
Potential Difference
Energy transferred from electrical energy to other forms per unit charge.
5 of 18
Volt
Defined as the energy transferred per unit charge - 1V is the p.d. across a component when 1J of energy is thransferred per 1C passing through the component.
6 of 18
Voltmeter
A device used to measure p.d. needs to be placed in parallel and have infinite resistance.
7 of 18
Electromotive force
The work done on the charge carriers per unit charge (measured across a cell or power supply).
8 of 18
Thermonic emission
The emission of electrons from the surface of a hot wire.
9 of 18
Resistors
An electrical component that obeys ohm's law transferring electrical energy to thermal.
10 of 18
Ohm
Defined as the resistance of a component that has a p.d. of 1V per unit ampere.
11 of 18
Ohm's Law
The p.d. is directly proportional to the current as long as the temperature remains constant.
12 of 18
Diode
A semiconductor component that allows current only in one particular direction.
13 of 18
Threshold p.d.
The minimum p.d. at which a diode will begin to conduct.
14 of 18
Resistivity
Property of a material defined as the product of the resistnace and cross-sectional area divided by its length.
15 of 18
Thermistors
An electrical component that has a resistance that decreases as it gets hot (negative temperature coefficient)
16 of 18
Light dependent resistors
An electrical component with a resistance that decreases as light intensity increases.
17 of 18
Kilowatt-hour
A derived unit of energy, Energy in kWh (1kWh =3.6MJ) is calculated by multiplying power in kW and time in hours.
