What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis involves using electricity to break down electrolytes to form elements.
1 of 20
What is the electricity passed through?
electrolytes
2 of 20
what is an electrolyte?
a substance which cannot conduct electricity in a solid state but it can in the molten or aqueous state.
3 of 20
what type of compound are electrolytes?
iconically bonded compounds
4 of 20
why can it not conduct electricity in the solid state?
The ions cannot move in the solid state, but they can move in the aqueous or molten state
5 of 20
what is an ion?
they are charged particles, which can be positively or negatively charged.
6 of 20
which side is the positive side of the battery or cell? the long or the short side?
the long side is the positive side and the short side is the negative side.
7 of 20
what is a negative electrode called?
cathode
8 of 20
name the reactivity series
please send cats monkeys and carbon zebras in to lovely hot countries, signed general penguin.

what is the half equation for zinc. And which electrode does it go to?
Zn2+ + 2e- = Zn it goes to the negative electrode
10 of 20
What is the half equation for chlorine? and what electrode does it go to?
2Cl- = 2Cl + 2e- it goes to the posotive electrode
11 of 20
2Br- = Br + 2e- and 2I- = I +2e-
Al3+ +3e- = Al and 2O2- = 02 + 4e-

Metals are formed at the negative electrode in electrolysis of MOLTEN compounds
non metals are formed at the positive electrode in electrolysis of MOLTEN compounds
13 of 20
AT NEGATIVE ELECTRODE } half equations for calcium and copper and sodium
Ca2+ +2e- = Ca and Cu2+ +2e- = Cu and Na+ + e- = Na
14 of 20
AT POSITIVE ELECTRODE } half equation for br
Br- = Br + e-

OIL RIG
oxidation Is loss of electrons and reduction is gain of electrons

What happens in the industrial electrolysis of molten aluminium oxide?
An electric current is passed through molten aluminium oxide a reaction occurs. Aluminium is formed at the negative electrode and Oxygen is formed at the positive electrode. The molten aluminium is piped off. but its expensive as lots of energy need
17 of 20
in the electrolysis of aqueous solutions, what is formed at the negative electrode?
if the metal is lower than hydrogen in the reactivity series the metal is produced not hydrogen. Hydrogen gas is released if the metal is higher than hydrogen in the reactivity series.
18 of 20
in the electrolysis of aqueous solutions, what is formed at the positive electrode?
If the non metal is a halogen the halogen is formed. If the non metal is not a halogen OXYGEN gas is produced
19 of 20
what group in the periodic table is a halogen
group 7 (fluorine chlorine bromine iodine)
