What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis means splitting up with electricity
1 of 10
What happens during electrolysis?
An electric current is passed through an electrolyte. The ions move towards the electrodes where they react and the compound decomposes. The positive ions will move towards the cathode and the negative ions will move to the anode.
2 of 10
What happens as ions gain or lose electrons?
They form the uncharged element and are discharged from the electrolyte
3 of 10
What does electrolysis of molten ionic solids form?
Elements
4 of 10
Where is aluminium extracted from?
Brauxite
5 of 10
Why is cryolite used when electrolysis of aluminium is taking place?
Because aluminium has such a high melting temperature cryolite is mixed in to lower the melting point.
6 of 10
Whats the equation for electrolysis of aluminium at the negative electrode?
Al3+ + 3e- --> Al
7 of 10
What is produced at the negative electrode in the electrolysis of aluminium?
Aluminium
8 of 10
Whats the equation for electrolysis of aluminium at the positive electrode?
2O2- --> O2 + 4e-
9 of 10
What is produced at the positive electrode in the electrolysis of aluminium?
Oxygen
