Clues
- Ball’s study of Beachside Comprehensive, 1981, examined the effect of banding and streaming on pupil performance. Ball found top stream students were warmed-up because they had higher expectations of students in the top set or stream. (4)
- Feminis believe education is negative and reinforces gender stereotypes and gender inequality which is all reinforced through the hidden curriculum. (8)
- Focussed on the idea of self fulfilling prophecy and concluded that the progress of students is a result of teacher expectations. These higher expectations had been communicated to the students and they had come to believe in the teachers 'prophecy'. (9, 3, 8)
- Halsey at al. found that there was a correlation between social classes and educational achievement. Those of a lower background were less likely to achieve high grades: this can be due to internal and external factors. (6)
- They focused on the effects that parental choices&competition between schools was having on education. They thought marketisation led school to only recruiting more academically able students and neglecting less able students= education less equal (4, 4, 3, 7)
- Writing from a functionalist perspective, Durkheim saw education as positive and provides important functions/roles for society. the functions of education are: create social solidarity and teaching specialised skill. (8)
- Writing from a functionalist perspective, He believes everybody has an equal opportunity to do well in education and school is a bridge between home and wider society. Functions of education: teaching core values and role allocation and meritocracy. (6)
- Writing from a marxist perspective, he conducted the research on "the lads" by monitoring their behaviour and attitude towards school. He noted that "the lads" formed a counter-school subculture and rejected the idea of meritocracy. (6)
- writing from a marxist perspective, they thought education reinforces capitalism and oppresses the working class. The organisation of schools mirror the workplace&hidden curriculum prepares children for future roles. Doesn't agree with meritocracy. (6, 3, 6)
