Ball’s study of Beachside Comprehensive, 1981, examined the effect of banding and streaming on pupil performance. Ball found top stream students were warmed-up because they had higher expectations of students in the top set or stream.

Focussed on the idea of self fulfilling prophecy and concluded that the progress of students is a result of teacher expectations. These higher expectations had been communicated to the students and they had come to believe in the teachers 'prophecy'.
