Modal dispersion
Material dispersion

Different wavelengths (colours of light) have different speeds

How to prevent material dispersion
Use monochromatic light

Why does modal dispersion occur?
Different angles causes more and less direct routes through the fibre

Consequence of modal dispersion
Some light takes a longer route so will arrive at a different time, causing pulse broadening

How to prevent modal dispersion
Single mode fibres are narrower so all light takes the most direct route
