If a petition gets 100,000 signatures it may be debated in Parliament (requires Backbench Business Committee thus not entirely direct democracy).

1.6 million people signed to stop Trump's State visit to the UK, so it was debated in Parliament and changed to a 'work visit'.

What do rallies and protests do?
Show the support/contempt towards the Government but the Government don't have to respond.
