What is democracy?
Government of the people, by the people, for the people. Includes "universal suffrage" expressing the idea of political equality.

What is direct democracy?
Direct, unmediated and continuous participation. People directly affect democracy and engage in policy decisions. (e.g.referendums)

What is representative democracy?
The electorate elects a representative to take on the decisions for them. It is an indirect form of democracy used most frequently in the UK, as people choose the more educated and experienced to make decisions on their behalf.

What is a referendum?
This enables the electorate to express a view on a particular issue. This is an example of direct democracy. It is however an unreliable method of influencing the content of policy, as the uneducated are directly responsible for change to issues.

What is an election?
A method of filling an office or post through choices made by a designated body of people - the electorates. They serve to: form governments, ensure representation and uphold legitimacy. It is a form of representative democracy on general issues.

What are three forms of participation besides elections and referendums?
Pressure groups. E-Petitions. Join a political party.
