what are social norms?

social norms are behaviours that are seen as acceptable and expected within a given society.

breaking the law E.g. shoplifting.

based on conventions of a particular society E.g. shouting out in the middle of a theatre performance.

the fact that society gives itself the right to intervene in abnormal people's lives can be beneficial, as some individuals that need it might not be able to help themselves.

it is an accurate method of diagnosing some conditions; e.g. antisocial personality disorder includes symptoms of impulsivity, aggression and irresponsibility.

someone breaching a social norm may just be eccentric or different but not be experiencing any form of mental illness.

social norms are not real, but are on the opinions or the ruling elite within society rather than majority opinion. social norms may be used to control those seen as a threat to social order. should be free of subjective factors and not objective.

social norms vary between cultures and across historical contexts, so what is regarded in one situation as abnormal might not be in another.

men and women are socialised differently. if men drink lots and fight on a night out it is more 'normal' that if women do.
