what is reform?
The theory that criminals should be taught not to commit crimes again. They have been brought up knowing about crime and they don't know how to live without it. It gives them the chance to get an education and qualifications to get a job.

What is retribution?
The theory that criminals should pay for what they have done wrong. They have made the victim suffer so they should suffer too. Its based on the proportion of how sever the crime is. This does the dictionary definition of 'Punish'.

What is protection?
Protecting society from criminals and their activities. To keep them out of society. Community service is for hooligans and vandal which keeps them off of the street during their leisure time.

What is deterrence?
Punishment that puts people off doing crimes. If people know that they will get their hand cut off for stealing then they won't do it. Or if they know that if they murder someone found guilty they will get murdered too then it will put them off.

Why do we need laws?
To keep society safe. To avoid people making crimes. For people to make choices. Protect peoples rights. Prevent genocide. Keep everything organised.

Why should laws be just?
So everyone gets treated the same. People want to stay in the country. Easy to follow. If the laws are unjust then civil wars may start. May think its right to break the law if unjust

civil- county, high, court, house of laws criminal- magistrate, crown, court, house of laws

Why justice is important for christians
Everyone if equal.

Attitudes to punishment Christian
Christ died to forgive people not to condemn them. Jesus taught the disciples to pray. "forgive us our sins and we forgive those who have sinned against us'' The bible says do not judge. St Paul said to settle differences outside court.

Muslim attitudes to punishment
committing a crime is an act against God. God will judge on the last day. Islam punishments are very harsh as they are based of deterrence and reform. Strict punishments are a last resort. If someone had stolen to feed a starving family then okay.

The Qur'an and justice
Belongs to God. He demands all people show justice and mercy to others. They should act against injustice but for a victim to forgive a person injustice is better.
