The need for laws
Know what sort of behaviour to expect from each other-no rules=chaos, need laws about business and work to ensure reward for work, protect weak from strong, keep everything organised
1 of 15
Why does there need to be a connection between laws and justice?
If law is unjust feel it is right to break law, people will campaign against unjust laws causing trouble in society, in one law in unjust what about others?, may think legal system isn't working and start civil war

6 of 15
Non-religious arguments about capital punishment (against)
Court system may be wrong;if in prison can be released but too late if killed, countries without death penalty have lower murder rate, murderers can regard life imprisonment as worse than death

Bible uses death penalty for various offences, Churches haven't cancelled statements that CP can be used by states, Christian Church used CP for crime of heresy, St Thomas Aquinas said protection of society is more important than reform of criminal

Jesus came to reform sinners;can't reform a dead person, Jesus said eye for eye+tooth for tooth is wrong, sanctity of life, Most Christian Churches have made statements condemning CP

Agree if no possibility of reforming sinner - Torah says CP should be used for certain crimes, Talmud says CP can be used but with restrictions, basis of punishment is protection of society, CP used if will deter people becoming threat to society
10 of 15

Mishnah seems to be against CP, agree with non-religious reasons against CP, teaching of Torah and Tenakh need updating-don't apply to today

Different attitudes to drugs and alcohol in Christianity(1)
1.Against drugs, moderation of alcohol + tobacco-first miracle Jesus did was water into wine, St Paul said Christians could drink in moderation, Jesus used bread+wine at Last Supper, most Churches use alcoholic wine in Mass
12 of 15
Different attitudes to drugs and alcohol in Christianity(2)
2.Against drugs, alcohol + tobacco - abusing God's temple (our bodies), passages in Bible warn against drunkenness, Bible teaches that alcohol damages judgment, inflames passion and invites violence, involved with recovering alcoholics (need support)

Attitudes to drugs in Judaism
Wrong - Torah;being addicted to physical pleasures+doing anything to support habit=wrong, drugs stop Jews from praying fulfil Mitzvot+learn Torah properly, stops young people honouring parents;causes upset, Torah says 'You shall be Holy'

Allowed in moderation - Tenakh; substance that 'gladdens the heart', wine is required in Shabbat+festivals, Drunkenness condemned in Tenakh+anyone who has drunk alcohol can't pray until sober, Torah 'You shall be holy'
