Compounds are formed when two or more elements combine together.

An atom is a compound of three sub - atomic particles (smaller than an atom) protons, neutrons, and electrons.

The atomic number is the amount of protons in the nucleus also equal to the number of electrons.

What is the charge for protons, neutrons and electrons?
Protons have a positive charge, electrons have a negative charge and neutrons are not charged.

What is the atomic mass number?
The atomic mass number is the sum of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.

They all have the same number of electrons in their highest energy level (outer shell).
