What is a consent form?
Consent forms are documents which are given to participants to help them decide whether they would like to participate in a study and gains their informed consent.

What information about the practical issues of the study is included in a consent form?
A consent form includes an introduction to the researcher, an explanation of the aim of the research, information about what the participants would be required to do in the study and how long the study may take.

What information about the ethical issues of the study is included in a consent form?
Consent forms tell participants that they have the right to withdraw at any time, how to withdraw their data, if they are likely to experience any harm, they should feel free to ask the researcher any questions at any time and will receive a full debrief

How is a consent form formatted?
A consent form requires the participant’s consent and includes space for the participant to sign, print their name and write the date.

What is a debrief?
Debriefs occur at the end of the study, and can be verbal (read out to the participant) or written. They inform participants of the true nature of the study and restore them to the state they were in at the start of the study.

What practical infomation do debriefs include?
Debriefs thank the participant for taking part, restate the aim of the research, tell the participants what they did in the study, and why and ask them if they have any questions.

How are debriefs used to deal with ethical issues?
Debriefs must reassure participants that results will be confidential and remind them they can still withdraw their data now, if they wish.
Debriefs can also deal with deception and protetcion from harm.

How are debriefs used to deal with deception?
If deception was involved, the true aim of the research must be revealed and explained with greater detail. The debrief explains why the participants were made to do things in the study. The researcher attempts to gain participants' retrospective consent

How are debriefs used to deal with protection from harm?
Debriefs must check that the participants have been protected from harm. If harmed, they need to be restored to at least as good a state as they entered the study. The researcher should reassure them that their feelings are normal and refer them to afterc
