What is the use of RAM?

What does a larger RAM size allow?
More instructions to be held in quick access without using virtual memory (performance increase)

What is virtual memory?
It's a section of the hard disc for the data the RAM isn't actively using on the hard drive to free up RAM. When the CPU needs this data, it takes it from the virtual memory as if it were RAM.

What is cache memory and what is its purpose?
It is the holding area for RAM, it ensures the CPU is always busy with data. More cache memory means more data can be held and less cycles are wasted.

What is flash memory?
Similar to RAM but it's non-volatile. Used in USB sticks & memory cards for digital cameras.
