What is a gender schema
A generalised representaion of everything we know in relation to gender and gender appropriate behaviour. Martin + Halverson say once a child has established gender identity around 2-3yrs they will begin to search for info that encourages development

Explain schema direct behaviour and self understanding
For young children, schemas are likely to be based around stereotypes like boys playing with trucks etc. These provide a framework that directs experience as well as understanding. By about 6yrs child has fixed and stereotypical idea of gender.

Explain Ingroups and Outgroups
Children have a better understanding of the schemas appropriate to their own gender (ingroup). Children pay more attention to info relevant to their gender identity rather than the opposite sex (outgroup). Around 8yrs they develop elaborate schemas

Supporting evidence- Martin + Halverson (1983) Children under 6yrs were more likely to remember photos of gender consistent behaviour when tested a week later.

Rigidity of gender beliefs-This theory can account for the fact young children tend to hold very fixed and rigid gender attitudes. Info that conflicts gets ignored.

Complements Kohlberg's Theory- Stangor + Ruble (1989) have suggested that gender schema and gender constancy describe 2 different things that work together

Overemphasis on the role of the individual in gender development- Importance of schemas are exaggerated. Kohlberg and GST may not have paid enough attention to parental influences and reinforcement etc. Doesn't explain WHY gender schemas develop

Key assumptions of the theory aren't supported- Assumed within GST that it should be possible to change children's behaviour by changing schema. But doesn't work. Within married couple who have strong equlaity beliefs in the home doesn't reflect on t
