The pathogen is multiplying rapidly, invading further, affecting tissues at site of initial colonisation & other areas

- immune and inflammatory responses are being triggered

- signs and symptoms are most severe at this stage

convalescence
Individual’s immune & inflammatory systems have in general successfully removed infectious agent

-Symptoms decline

- However, the disease may be fatal or may enter a latency phase - resolution of symptoms until reactivation at another time.
