Stage 1; Incubation period

Microorganism has entered the individual: undergone colonisation & begun multiplying.

Insufficient numbers to cause symptoms.

May last from several hours, to days, to years.

Stage 2; Prodromal stage.

Appearance of initial symptoms (mild).

Pathogens continue to multiply.

General signs of illness = activation of the immune system.

Stage 3; Invasion period.

Pathogen is multiplying rapidly.
Immune & inflammatory response triggered.

Development of symptoms specifically related to the pathogen.

Symptoms related to protective inflammatory response.

Signs & symptoms are most obvious and severe.

Stage 4; Convalescence period.

Immune & inflammatory systems have successfully removed infectious agent.

Symptoms decline.

Disease may enter latency phase, symptoms resolve until reactivation.
