The average condition of the air around us over a period of time. Records have to be kept on rainfall and temperature for at least 35 years.

Latititude
How close you are to the equator or the poles. Zero degrees means you are at the equator. 90 degrees means you are at one of the poles.

Prevailing Wind
The direction of the most common wind blowing over an area. This is important because the winds bring air masses from different places which greatly affects the climate.The prevailing wind in the UK is south-westerly.

Desert
A region with very low annual rainfall that are found between the tropics of cancer and capricorn.

Hot Deserts
The daytime temperatures are very high but the night temperature can drop to below freezing due to the heat loss under clear skies.

Cold Deserts
Hot in summer but experiences the cold winters. Such as the Gobi Desert in central Asia.

Maritime Climate
Influenced by the sea and the winds that blow off it. This maintains mild temperatures across the seasons cooling the land in summer and heatind it in winter.

Continental Climate
Found in the middl;e of land masses. It has hotter summers and colder winters than places nearer to the sea.

Mediterranean Climate
Is found between the latitudes of 35 and 45 degrees. It occurs around Europe's Mediterranean sea and also in parts of south africa, parts of Australia and coastal areas of California.

Polar Climate
The nights can last for several months and temperatures can fall to extremely low values. The continent of Antarctica is considered a desert becuase of low annual rainfall. Within the Polar circles you can sometimes see the midnight sun.
