What evidence do we have that climate
change is happening?
- Ice and sediment cores
- Tree rings
- Pollen analysis
- Temperature records

How do ice and sediment cores show that
climate change is happening?
1. Ice sheets are made up of layers of ice.
2. Scientists drill into these ice sheets to get long cores of ice.
3. They analyse the gases trapped in the layers of ice to tell the temperatures of each year.
4. The remains of organisms in ocean sediments ca

How do tree rings show that climate change is happening?
1. Trees form a new ring each year.
2. Rings are thicker in warm, wet conditions.
3. The rings are counted to see the age of the
tree.
4. The thickness is analysed to see the climate.

How does pollen analysis show that climate change is happening?
1. Pollen from plants gets preserved in sediment.
2. This gets identified and dated to show what species were living at the time.
3. This gets compared to plant conditions now.

How do temperature records show that climate change is happening?
1. Since 1850s, global temperatures have been measured with a thermometer.
2. This is only a short-term record of temperature change.
3. Historical records (harvest dates, newspaper records) can tell us climate change from further back.

What are natural factors that could cause
climate change?
- Orbital changes
- Volcanic activity
- Solar output

What are human factors that could cause climate change?
- Burning fossil fuels
- Cement production
- Farming
- Deforestation

How does climate change affect the
environment?
1. Ice caps are melting which is making sea levels rise, loss of polar habitats, regular flooding on low-lying areas, more frequent coastal erosion.
2. Loss of biodiversity as habitats are being destroyed and species are struggling to adapt.
3. Precipitat

How does climate change affect people?
1. Deaths due to heat have increased.
2. Places becoming uninhabitable- too hot and
dry or too much flooding. People may have to
migrate elsewhere- overcrowding.
3. Lack of water supply- political issues.
4. Can increase/decrease crop yields.

What are some mitigation strategies to reduces the causes of climate change?
Planting trees- reduces CO2 through photosynthesis
Carbon capture- captures CO2 in factories and store it safe underground
Alternative energy production- more renewable sources ie wind, tidal, wave
International agreements- The Paris Agreement, developed

How are people adapting to the effects of
climate change?
Changing agricultural systems- planting new crop types in suited climate conditions, biotechnology to create weather resistant crops.
Managing water supply- water meters to discourage excessive water use, rainwater and wastewater can be recycled.
