What is the chemical name and formula for limestone?
calcium carbonate - CaCO3
1 of 12
What happens to limestone when it is heated?
It is thermally decomposed to form calcium oxide (quicklime) and carbon dioxide
2 of 12
What happens when you add water to calcium oxide?
calcium hydroxide is produced (slaked lime)
3 of 12
What happens when you add more water to calcium hydroxide?
it becomes calcium hydroxide solution (limewater)
4 of 12
WHat happens when you bubble carbon dioxide through limewater?
It produces an insoluble calcium carbonate suspension which makes it go cloudy.
5 of 12
Name a use for calcium oxide or powdered limestone
neutralise acidic soils
6 of 12
How do you produce cement?
limestone and clay are heated together in a rotary kiln to produce cement. A little calcium sulphate (gypsum) is added to stop the cement from setting too quickly.

How do you make glas?
by heating limestone, sand and sodium carbonate to temperatures of about 1500degreescelsius.

What kind of material is glass?
It is part way between a solid and liquid as the particles and disorderly arranged by rigidly held in place
