Chemistry C2 Rates and energy 4.1 - 4.9

?
What do we mean by the rate of reaction?
The amount of reactants used up over a period of time.
1 of 12
How can we find out the rate of a chemical reaction?
The amout of products made over time.
2 of 12
What affects the rate of a chemical reaction?
-Temperature -Surface area -Concentration of solution/pressure of gas -Presence of catalyst
3 of 12
What is the collision theory?
The reacting particles don't just have to bump into each other. They also need enough energy to react when they collide.
4 of 12
How does increasing the temperature affect the rate of a reaction?
Reaction time increases when the temperature does.
5 of 12
How does a rising temperature support the collision theory?
Increasing the temperature increases the rate of the reaction because particles collide more frequently and more energetically. More of the collisions result in a reaction because a higher proportion of particles have energy greater than activation
6 of 12
How does increasing the concentration of reactants/pressure of gas in solutions affect the rate of reaction?
it increases the frequency of collisions between the particles, as so increases the rate of reaction.
7 of 12
What is a catalyst?
A substance that speeds up the rate of a reaction.
8 of 12
How do catalysts affect the rate of a reaction?
They speed it up without being used up.
9 of 12
How is energy involved in chemical reactions?
Energy may be transferred to or from the reacting substances in a chemical reaction.
10 of 12
How can we use energy from exothermic reactions?
In hand warmers and self heating cans. This can be reusable or a 'One-off'
11 of 12
How can we use the cooling effect from endothermic reactions?
Instant cooling packs for sporting injury's.
