What is oxidation?
The gain of oxygen and the loss of electrons e.g when metals reacts with oxygen - metal oxides are formed.

Name the reactivity series in order from most reactive to least reactive.
Potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, carbon, zinc, iron, hydrogen, copper, silver, gold, platinum.
6 of 15
What is a displacement reaction?
A reaction where the more reactive metal displaces the less reactive metal which forms a compound and metal.
7 of 15
What is type of ion formed when metals react with other substances?
+ ions
8 of 15
What is a spectator ion?
An ion that doesn't change during a chemical reaction.

Reactions of reactive metals with cold water:
What is the reaction of potassium?
What is the reaction of sodium?
What is the reaction of lithium?
Potassium - the hydrogen produced ignites and the metal also sets alight with a lilac flame.
Sodium - fizzes rapidly and melts to form a ball that moves on the water surface.
Lithium - fizzes steadily and floats, eventually disappears.
10 of 15
What do potassium, sodium and lithium produce when they react with cold water?
metal hydroxide + hydrogen gas
