Chemistry- Chapter 9

?
Enthalpy
The heat content that is stored in a chemical system.
1 of 11
Enthalpy change, ΔH
Difference in enthalpy between the reactants and products in a reaction.
2 of 11
Average bond enthalpy
The average bond enthalpy change that takes place when breaking by homolytic fission 1 mole of a given type of bond in the molecule of a gaseous species.
3 of 11
Standard enthalpy of combustion
The enthalpy change that takes place when 1 mole of of a substance reacts completely with oxygen under standard conditions all reactants and products being in their standard states.
4 of 11
Standard enthalpy change of formation
The enthalpy change that takes place when 1 mole of a compound is formed from its elements under standard conditions, with all reactants and products in their standard states.
5 of 11
Standard enthalpy change of neutralisation
The enthalpy chnage that accompanies the reaction of an acid by a base o form one mole of H2O(l), under standard conditions, with all reactants and products in their standard states.
6 of 11
Enthalpy cycle
A diagram for a reaction to compares the enthalpy of the reactants with the enthalpy of the products.
7 of 11
Specific heat capacity
The energy required to raise the temperature of 1g of a substance by 1K
8 of 11
Hess' Law
If a reaction can take place by more than one route and the initial and final conditions are the same, the total enthalpy change is the same for each route.
9 of 11
Endothermic reaction
A reaction in which the enthaply of the products is greater than the enthalpy of the reactants, resulting in heat being taken in from the surroundings (ΔH is positive)
10 of 11
Exothermic reaction
A reaction in which the enthalpy of the products is smaller than the enthalpy of the reactants, resulting in heat loss to the surroundings. (ΔH is negative)
