Compounds
Substances in which 2 or more elements are chemically combined
1 of 7
Ionic
- Particles are oppositely charged ions
- occurs in compounds formed from metals combined with non- metals
2 of 7
Covalent
- Particles are atoms which share pairs of electrons
- occurs in most non- metallic elements and in compounds of non- metals
3 of 7
Metallic
- particles are atoms which share delocalised electrons
- Occurs in metallic elements and alloys
4 of 7
Ion
- An atom with a net electrical charge
5 of 7
Electrostatic force (of ionic compounds)
the electrostatic force of attraction between a positively charged metal ion and a negatively charged non-metal ion
6 of 7
Delocalised electron
The electrons from the outer shells of the metal atoms are delocalised , and are free to move through the whole structure.
This sharing of delocalised electrons results in strong metallic bonding .
