Aim?
To see the effect of TV on children's pro and anti social behaviour
1 of 8
Participants?
3-8 year olds
2 of 8
Procedure?
Studied playground behaviour before and after the introduction of television. Filmed behaviour over 2 weeks, at 2 schools, 4 months before TV and again 5 years later.
3 of 8
How was it measured?
Coded by 4 pro-social behaviours eg helping, displaying affection and 4 anti social behaviours eg kicking, damaging property. Results were compared over the 2 time points and there were 2 blind independent researchers did the coding.
4 of 8
Results?
Boys were less pro and anti social. Boys & girls were pro social overall. Very little effect of tv was apparent.
5 of 8
Conclusion
Intro of TV had little effect on children's behaviour - if anything it was more pro social. Authors concluded that this may reflect strong community rather than the introduction of tv having no effect.
6 of 8
Strengths?
Inter-rater reliability improves the objectivity. Good application because its relevant to today's society. High Ecological validity because it was a real life situation. Consent was gained from the parents.
7 of 8
Weaknesses?
Generalisation is low because it was a small sample. Can't replicate the situation. Construct validity was low because they didn't record the children's viewing habits.
