what are antigens?
molecules (usually proteins) that can generate an immune response when detected by the body
1 of 7
where are antigens normally found?
on the surface of cells
2 of 7
what are antigens used for within the immune system?
to identify pathogens, abnormal body cells, toxins and cells from individuals of the same species (e.g. organ transplants)
3 of 7
what are pathogens?
organisms that cause disease
4 of 7
what do phagocytes do?
they recognise foreign antigens on a pathogen
5 of 7
what does the membrane of the phagocyte then do?
it projects out and then the cytoplasm of the phagocyte moves round the pathogen (engulfing it) as it's enclosed in a phagocytic vacuole
6 of 7
what organelle fuses with the phagocytic vacuole which then releases enzymes into the vacuole?
lysosomes
