Cells

?
What parts do animal and plant cells have in common?
-selectively permeable cell membrane -nucleus (both surrounded by nuclear membrane) -cytoplasm -mitochondria
1 of 11
What structures do plants have that aren't found in animal cells?
- fully permeable cellulose cell wall -chloroplasts - a vacuole
2 of 11
What are the functions of these structures?
-Cell wall: It provides a rigid structure and gives the cell a particular shape to support itself -Chloroplasts: site of p'syn, contains chlorophyll and is only present in green part of plant
3 of 11
What are the functions of these structures? (Cont.)
-Vacuole: A fluid filled space surrounded by a membrane. It contains cell sap and helps keep the shape of the cell.
4 of 11
What are the functions of these structures? (Cont..)
-Cytoplasm: Where all chemical reactions take place. Cell membrane: It helps control what enters or leaves the cell. It is semi-permeable as it only allows some substances in and out
5 of 11
What are the functions of these structures? (Cont...)
-Nuclear membrane: It surrounds the nucleus. It contains pores. Nucleus: The control centre of the cell and controls reactions. It contails genetic information and chromosomes. Mitochondria: The site of cell respiration.

What is the total magnification?
eyepiece magification x magnification of objective lens used
7 of 11
How do you prepare a temporary slide?
-Cut a square of onion skin using a scalpel -Peel off a thin layer of the epidermis using forceps -Place on a clean slide with a few drops of water or iodine to stop them drying out -The iodine colours the cells so that they show up -Place cover on
8 of 11
What do you need to remember when using a microscope?
Start by using the lower objective lens first
9 of 11
What are bacterial cells made of?
- They have a cell membrane but NO nucleus -They have plasmids (small rings of DNA) -they have free chromosomes and a cell wall (not made of cellulose)
10 of 11
What is specialisation?
When thecells are designed to carry out a particular function. specialised cell > tissue > organ > organ system > organism
